Can drinking coffee improve your health?

It seems likely.  Apparently drinking 3-4 cups a day (regular or decaf) could help you live longer - perhaps quite a bit longer.

The truth is that no one is really sure why this is so.  There's a certain amount of mystery surrounding why coffee does what it does, regarding the measurable health benefits of its consumption.  However, it's becoming a more and more agreed upon fact that the more of it your drink, the better off you are from a health standpoint.

The bottom line is that the more you drink, the longer you'll live.

In a 2012 mortality study of 400,000 people printed in The New England Journal of Medicine, coffee drinkers had between 6 and 16 percent fewer deaths.  Likewise, in a Japanese study printed in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, coffee drinkers were 24 percent less likely to die during a 19-year follow-up.

The ideal amount appears to be about three to four cups a day of regular or decaf, but one study involving six cups a day saw a 33 percent reduction in diabetes diagnoses.  Other maladies positively affected by coffee include liver cancers, fatty livers, alcoholic liver disease, heart disease, stroke, depression, Alzheimer's, and Parkinson's.

Yes.  We've covered this.  Ganoderma is an amazing thing, but drinking coffee (overall) seems to be a good idea.  It's certainly not a bad one.  Now why is that - like, with caffeine and stuff?

Let's ask a medical doctor...

It may seem counterintuitive: A substance known to increase blood pressure might actually be good for the cardiovascular system. Caffeine consumption can cause a short-lived increase in blood pressure, and regular use has been linked to a longer-term increase. However, when caffeine is ingested via coffee, enduring blood pressure elevations are small and cardiovascular risks may be balanced by protective properties.

Coffee beans contain antioxidant compounds that reduce oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, and coffee consumption has been associated with reduced concentrations of inflammatory markers.  Moderate coffee intake is associated with a lower risk for coronary heart disease as far out as 10 years, and data suggest that an average of two cups per day protects against heart failure.  Finally, a study presented during a poster session at the Heart Rhythm Society 2015 Scientific Sessions counters the long-held dogma that patients with arrhythmias should avoid caffeine, finding no association between the compound and premature atrial or ventricular contractions. Medscape contributor Dr John Mandrola recently wrote, "This abstract changes my practice. And here we have a medical reversal that is cause for celebration."

Is Organo Gold coffee healthy? (Part 2)

Speaking at investment bank Jefferies’ annual consumer conference, Carbone called Dunkin Donuts’ beverage business the “holy grail” for profitability, with the highest margins of all its sales categories. As Dunkin prepares to head “west of the Mississippi”, as Carbone put it, the company is rolling out a national media campaign focused on its drinks rather than any of its food offerings. Dunkin’s eye is on the prize: California, where the Boston-based chain has no presence to date, but where top competitor Starbucks operates well over 2,000 stores — more than triple the number in the Seattle coffee giant’s second most saturated state, Texas. Carbone said the company has been targeting California with its coffee ads since 2010, despite having no plans to open up shop there until 2015. “By the time we’re in California, they’ll have seen five years of national media focused on beverages,” he said of the plan.

Today, Dunkin Donuts operates around 7,400 US stores, with its core business in New England, New York and other eastern markets including Pennsylvania and Florida. The chain broke ground in Las Vegas in 2005, marking its first big westward move. The aim, said Carbone, is to have 15,000 outlets up and running in the next few years, with California stores accounting for a significant chunk of this new real estate. While Dunkin will continue pushing its coffee menu to Californians, the chain seems to be aiming squarely at health-conscious Golden State residents with an unexpected announcement this week. It’ll start selling gluten-free muffins and donuts later this year, becoming the first major fast food outlet to jump on the anti-wheat bandwagon. Flour-loving Fred the Baker would be out of business.

Kind of scary, huh?  Sure, but the historical fact is that the death sentence was common in ancient times for stealing and/or interfering with the trade of precious commodities.  It was the same thing in the Old West with horses!

Actually, before the 1500's, coffee wasn't known in Arabia (or really much of anyplace else).  But once nomads and dervishes started sharing this African discovery, and the process for brewing it, it's virtues became known by a wide population and coffee beans evolved into a valuable commodity.  What's more, in cities like Mecca, 'coffee houses' became popular gathering places for socializing, exchanging news and even playing popular boardgames, like chess - sort of the like the Facebook of their day (The same thing happened in Europe when coffee was introduced there, a century or so later, but that's another story).

In fact, this activity (centered around the love of coffee) became so popular that the Governor believed it to be a threat.  In his mind, the extensive socializing at these coffee houses might lead to insurrection and revolt, not to mention that he believed coffee to be an intoxicating substance, forbidden by the Koran.

So what did he do?  He banned the drinking of coffee in Mecca!

Now people really WERE plotting a revolution and news reached the Sultan in Egypt (i.e. Khair's boss), who was an avid coffee drinker.  The result was that the Sultan restored legal consumption of coffee in Mecca and had Khair Beg executed!

Is Organo Gold only about coffee?

Is coffee a healthy drink?

Navigating the Organo Gold 'scam' nonsense

Is Organo Gold a 'scam'?  Of course not.  But as you know, the Internet is a funny place.  You can slander or smear anyone or anything and it just stays out there.  Clever people use the Internet to attack anything and everthing from famous people, to politicians, to religion and (of course) various businesses, especially the really large and successful ones.  It's all designed to make you question your beliefs or shape your opinion... and it's largely anonymous. These character assassins are quite clever - so much so that their smear websites inevitably end up on the first page of Google searches.  That's because they're damned good at it!  They're good at it because they do it a LOT.

Of course, these people are liars and their motivation should be obvious.  As a matter of fact, do a Google search for ANY successful network marketing company and there will be a 'scam' accusation regarding that company on the first page of Google (if not the first page, then definitely the second).  I guarantee it.  The same goes for the news media.  You see it all the time.  Anything or anyone doing well with network marketing will come under attack if they're doing 'too well'.  99 out of 100 times, it's some local reporter creating 'news' by creating a controversy.  But in reality, it's a legal attack designed to benefit the attacker.  The truth has nothing to do with it.  They don't care.

Billy Joel famously said that, "You know you've made the big time when you get sued."  It's because you've either got something they want (money) or you're getting in their back pocket (people are joining your business instead of theirs).  It's the same in this business.  You know that your company is a success when your competition, or just spiteful people in general, starts launching attacks.  People are evil, but the Internet isn't.  It's just a mindless robot.  So the only way to navigate 'scam' claims about any company is to to do your OWN investigation.  If you actually trust and put your faith in random Internet blather, you can be lead around by the nose to believe whatever anyone wants you to believe.

There are a couple of other network marketing companies out there with a coffee product, but you'll never hear me attacking them, calling them 'scams' or otherwise smearing them on this blog.  That's low-energy and I don't have time for it.

Lastly, there are a variety of attack websites out there on Google (along with some breathless media reports) about the 'dangers' of Ganoderma.  Well, Ganoderma has been around for thousands of years.  It's in lots of products and supplements and is freely available in bulk at any Chinese herb shop.  Organo Gold makes no medical claims about its products, though the various health benefits of Ganoderma are legendary.  Lots of people claim that it makes them feel better, and have since ancient times.  Some feel no difference at all.  Whatever.  If don't think you should drink coffee or tea with Ganoderma in it, then don't drink it.  Simple.  Some people aren't supposed to drink milk or eat butter.  So guess what?  They don't drink milk or eat butter.  Who cares?
