Why do so many professional athletes end up penniless?

It certainly doesn't have to be that way.  When they hand these 19-20 year old kids millions of dollars, a lot of them never think about the future or just how short their careers might be... especially in the NFL.  For example, the average career length for an NFL running back is 3-4 years.  So what's that guy going to do with the rest of his life and how is he going to adjust to the 'real world' where his job no longer pays hundreds of thousands, or even millions of dollars, a year?
